1. Mountain View vs. Redmond

  1. This is fairly decisive. ML community, Startup environment, youth.
  2. Culture
    1. Age of co-workers
    2. Energy level
  3. Density of Quality Researchers
  4. Level of Researchers
  5. Breadth of Interests
  6. Ability to Publish Research
  7. Contact with future cofounders and employees
  8. Reputation to be leveraged
  9. Friendships
  10. Growth through side projects, influence, social, spiritual, etc.

Pro MSR:

  1. Density of quality researchers
  2. Breadth of opportunity
  3. Sense of freedom and collective exploration of ideas

Negative MSR:

  1. Contact with the ml community
    1. I want to start a set of groups
    2. Lifestyle - roommates I would live with in the bay
  2. Friendships
  3. Growth through side projects, influence, social
  4. Lacks a sense of collective purpose… very atomized

I did a lot of due diligence on brain, talked to people who had been in both places.

I see myself there, but with a family. Once I fit into that demographic space. If I didn’t want the option to start a company, I would likely choose it over Brain - it’s a more free research environment. There are larger scale goals that I have, which will require many people oriented towards a single task. Being embedded in the bay makes that much easier.
