# young builder resources

a curated, opinionated guide for teen and young builders — the programs, communities, funding, competitions, and honest advice I wish existed when I started building in 6th grade.

this is not a comprehensive list of every program that exists. it's a filtered guide written from the perspective of someone who's actually navigated this landscape: which things are worth your time, which are overrated, and what nobody tells you.

**who this is for:** high school and early college builders who are already making things (or want to start). people who care more about getting better than getting credentials.

**who this is NOT for:** people looking for a college admissions checklist. there are plenty of those already.

## the guide

### [the anti-pipeline manifesto](/wiki/anti-pipeline-manifesto)
the philosophy behind this guide. why growth > position, why the prestige pipeline is crowded, and how to think about building as a teen. start here if you want to understand the lens everything else is written through.

### [summer programs](/wiki/summer-programs)
research programs (RSI, SSP, PROMYS, ROSS, SUMaC, Clark Scholars, Garcia, Simons, MITES), startup/builder programs (LaunchX, TKS, Interact, YYGS), and how to get internships as a teen. honest takes on what's worth it.

### [competitions & hackathons](/wiki/competitions-hackathons)
math competitions (AMC/AIME/USAMO, HiMCM, MCM/ICM, M3, MTFC, USAYPT), science fairs (ISEF, Regeneron STS, JSHS), hackathons (where to find them, how to win), business competitions (DECA, FBLA, Diamond Challenge), and special awards (Davidson Fellows, Thiel Fellowship, Breakthrough Junior Challenge).

### [funding & grants](/wiki/funding-grants)
Thiel Fellowship ($200k), 1517 Fund, Emergent Ventures, Z Fellows, Neo, Dorm Room Fund, and other ways to fund your projects as a minor. includes the practical legal stuff nobody talks about.

### [communities](/wiki/communities)
where teen builders actually find each other: Hack Club, Socratica, Twitter/X builder scene, Sunday Dinners, AGI House, hackathon communities, and relevant online spaces.

### [learning paths](/wiki/learning-paths)
how to go from "can code" to "can build products." self-directed learning, technical depth tracks (ML/AI, web dev, hardware, research), the "vibe coding" path with AI tools, and key resources that actually matter.

### [mentorship & networking](/wiki/mentorship-networking)
cold outreach that works, the tiered relationship system, how to not be cringe when reaching out to adults, event networking, and how mentors actually emerge.

### [tools & stack](/wiki/tools-stack)
free/cheap hosting (Vercel, Cloudflare, Railway), GitHub Student Developer Pack, AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot), design tools, project management, and the complete $0 stack for launching a product.
